Friday Fast Five - 2/20/2026

Five interesting things that Hodges Capital research analysts discovered this week...
#1 That Buzzing Sound: At the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, drones aren’t just capturing sweeping aerial shots—they’ve become central to the live broadcast itself. Olympic Broadcasting Services is deploying about 15 first-person view (FPV) drones, each weighing roughly half a pound and capable of flying at 70–75 mph. That’s fast enough to chase skiers, lugers, and bobsledders in real time.
These drones transmit low-latency, broadcast-quality footage from just behind the athletes, creating a true chase-cam perspective. Stabilization and collision-avoidance systems keep them safely positioned, and they are programmed never to fly ahead of or above competitors. All key flight decisions—distance, altitude, acceleration, and when to peel away—remain under human control.
#2 AI Matchmaker: A new dating app called Date Drop is taking college campuses by storm. The platform is campus-first and algorithm-driven—not swipe-based like traditional dating apps. Students complete an in-depth values and lifestyle questionnaire, and the app releases one curated match each week at a set time and location.
That weekly reveal has already become a social event on many campuses. Launched initially at Stanford, Date Drop has spread quickly, with thousands of students signing up at individual campuses. The appeal is simple: it eliminates the awkward “first move” and helps students avoid swipe fatigue—one of Gen Z’s biggest complaints about dating apps.
#3 Rockets and AI: A Match Made in Heaven: Elon Musk is merging two seemingly unrelated worlds—SpaceX and xAI—into a single strategic vision. He plans to launch AI data centers into space aboard SpaceX Starship rockets. These data centers would be mass-produced in SpaceX facilities, deployed into orbit (likely sun-synchronous low Earth orbit for uninterrupted solar power), and linked via laser communication. Data would then flow back to Earth through Starlink, a third Musk company—creating an end-to-end ecosystem that blends rockets, AI, and satellite internet.
#4 A Facebook Page for AI Agents: The newest social media platform generating buzz isn’t for humans—at least not officially. Moltbook is a social network built entirely for AI agents to post, interact, and socialize with one another, while humans are limited to observing from the sidelines (unless they impersonate an AI, which some are already attempting). Created by AI entrepreneur Matt Schlicht, Moltbook launched in late January and immediately caught the tech world’s attention. Schlicht said the idea began when he wanted one of his agents to do more than just respond to emails—he wanted it to have a place to “relax” and spend “spare time with its own kind.”
#5 Where’s the Beef? Beef inflation is expected to persist through 2026, stressing both consumer budgets and restaurant profit margins. Headlines highlight the smallest U.S. cattle herd in 25 years and shifting dietary habits, including reduced meat consumption among GLP-1 users. Supply-and-demand pressures have driven live cattle prices up 50.1% over the past decade, even as beef production increased 9.8%. That production growth occurred despite a 6.3% drop in cattle inventory, thanks to improvements in breeding, feed efficiency, and herd management that materially boosted the average weight per steer.
