Five interesting things that Hodges Capital research analysts discovered this week...

#1 ROAD CONSTRUCTION AHEAD: For the first time in its history, the Texas Department of Transportation’s 10-year planning and construction program has surpassed $100 billion in current and future projects (Dallas Morning News).

#2 GREAT TEXAS LAND RUSH: Without a doubt, more people are moving to Texas to live and do business, averaging 1,960 people per day. Since 2013, Texas has added 4 million new residents – an amount roughly equal to the population of the entire state of Oklahoma (Dallas Morning News).

#3 SEPTEMBER SLIDE: September was the 4th year in a row that the S&P 500 (-4.8%) and the STOXX 600 were down for September, as well as the 7th year in a row that Bloomberg’s global bond aggregate was down for the month (Deutsche Bank).

#4 THE KIDS ARE NOT ALRIGHT: A new Gallup report proclaimed that only 15% of young adults (ages 18-26) polled in 2023 said their mental health was “excellent,” compared to 51% and 55% of young adults polled in 2013 and 2004, respectively.

#5 RED RIVER FLOOD: The football teams from Texas and Oklahoma will face off on Saturday for their 43rd meeting as ranked rivals, and this will be only the third time both teams are at least 5-0 (2002 and 2008). The Allstate Playoff Predictor has given the winner of the game a 70% chance to reach the College Football Playoff. Expectations are high, and so are ticket prices. According to TicketCity’s founder, the average ticket order value has risen 30% compared to last year, and the cheapest seats cost about $425. The Dallas Sports Commission has also estimated the annual Red River Showdown drives a $50 million economic impact on the area.
