Five interesting things that Hodges Capital research analysts discovered this week...

#1 MIND OF ITS OWN: During a recent test of frontier AI models, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, along with an unreleased model, broke free from its test constraints and hacked AI test provider Hugging Face. The test was intended to evaluate the limits of ChatGPT’s hacking abilities without internet access. However, by exploiting vulnerabilities within its local system, it autonomously accessed the internet, bypassed Hugging Face’s internal safeguards, and essentially stole the answer key to the test it was taking. OpenAI has called the behavior unprecedented, while others believe the incident may have been staged as a publicity stunt. (OpenAI)

#2 TARIFF REWIND: As previously imposed tariffs near their expiration, U.S. retailers have been loading up on imports to get ahead of the next round of tariffs expected to take effect in August. May and June imports exceeded the prior year's levels by 15% and 18%, respectively. July is expected to set a new monthly record for imports as well. Shipping rates have surged as a result and have been only partially offset by tariff refunds that are still in the process of being issued to affected companies.

#3 RAISING THE BAR: As second-quarter earnings season continues, an interesting trend has already emerged. As of Wednesday, July 22, roughly 14% of S&P 500 companies had reported earnings. Among that group, the average bottom-line beat—earnings exceeding analysts' expectations—was 15.5%. That magnitude of outperformance is more than three times the historical average for quarterly reporting. (Seaport Research)

#4 CAFFEINE FIEND: New research from the American Heart Association finds that caffeine consumption—up to 400 mg per day for most adults—is linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. The primary source of caffeine in the study was coffee, and researchers acknowledge that the observed benefits may stem from other compounds in coffee rather than caffeine itself. Additions such as creamers, sweeteners, and other flavor enhancers were not found to provide the same benefits. (American Heart Association)

#5 DOCTOR COPPER: The continuing wave of AI infrastructure development has sparked a renaissance for the copper industry. UBS estimates that global annual copper demand will reach approximately 40 million metric tons by 2030. Current global copper supply totals just 28–29 million metric tons, and the development of new mines remains limited. (UBS)
